I’m back home after a week of training on ArcSDE. I have to say that SDE seems to be a very nice way to go. I think that management of our data will be much easier than our current methods, which rely heavily on Coverages, Shapefiles, and lots of AML scripts.
There is a lot for us to think about in going to ArcSDE and SQL Server. First, the design of the database - everything from actual feature classes to capacity planning will need to be covered. Next, our internal workflow will need to be re-thought from the ground up. We’ll also need to think about our methods for sharing data with our data partners and how to modify our many custom applications.
Looks like I’ll be a busy boy for a while.
I would like to reiterate how impressed I am with ESRI’s training. First rate all the way. The materials were well thought out and the instructors knew their stuff. I’ll definitely be taking more classes in the future.

Just a note from one who has done this quite a bit - don’t be afraid to experiment with SQL/SDE. Create databases, throw some data in, and start messing around - it’s much more tolerant than Oracle/SDE. Don’t think you need to plan to the nth degree before you do anything - you’ll learn more by playing around anyhow!

The thing I’m a little worried about is making some poor design choices and having the rest of the county start using that bad design *before* it’s recognized. Maybe I’ll feel better about it when we get some data in SQL Server and play around with it.
