Everyday Maps - Play Ball!

This past Sunday (June 4th) was my 44th Birthday. To celebrate, my son and I took in a Wichita Wranglers game (the Wranglers are the KC Royals AA farm club, and play in the Texas League). I bought the tickets on line and to see what level of tickets I wanted I was shown a seating chart. Which is really a map of the stadium. Here’s what Lawrence-Dumont Stadium looks like -

Lawrence-Dumont Stadium

As you can see, it’s not a large stadium, and the map is pretty simple. The colors of the sections denote pricing levels, and the first and third base lines, along with home plate, are shown for context.

As I mentioned earlier, the Wranglers are a farm club of the Royals. Here’s what Kauffman stadium’s seating chart looks like -
Kauffman Stadium

Quite a bit bigger stadium, and a lot more complex map, but the basics are the same. Color denotes pricing level, and the field is shown for context. The Kauffman map shows more details about the stadium, like gates, scoreboard location and the gift shop. Knowing the scoreboard location could be important if it was poorly placed, but most stadium designs give the entire seating area a fairly good view of the scoreboard.

Both maps provide a North arrow, but scale is not explicitly stated. It is implied by showing at least part of the infield which, if you know anything about baseball, would give you a pretty good idea of the scale.

By the way, the Wranglers won, 1-0, over the San Antonio Missions. It was a lot of fun and a great way to spend the evening.
