As I wrote last week, I’m at the ESRI St. Louis Regional Office this week for training on ArcSDE. The office is actually located in the heart of the St. Charles Historic District. Being, well, historic, there’s a lot of things to see here. One of those things is the Eastern trailhead of the Katy Trail State Park.
When the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (aka the “Katy”) decided to cease operation on its route from Machens, MO (in St. Charles County) to Sedalia, MO in 1986, some folks had an idea to turn that right-of-way into a nearly 200 mile recreational trail.
Thanks to a hefty donation from Edward D. “Ted” Jones (of Edward Jones), the state was able to make it happen. Since then additional right-of-ways have been acquired, bringing the total trail length to 225 miles.
The section of the trail from St. Charles to Booneville (think Daniel Boone) is part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. I’ll write more about the Lewis and Clark expedition (which started from St. Charles) later this week.
