By now, many people have commented on the death of former astronaut Wally Schirra yesterday. There is, of course, a lot of information on his accomplishments, which were many.
I always felt a personal connection with Wally. My mom used to joke that I was named after him (sorry mom, not sure I buy that), but we did share a name that is not all that common. For that reason (irrational as it is) Schirra was always my “favorite” astronaut. Of course, that was at a time when people actually knew the names of the astronauts, and they were considered national heroes.
He was quite a man, and I will miss him.
